We pull plugs of soil out of the lawn and drop new seed into the holes. It has to happen between August 15 and October 5. Do it in spring and the seed is fighting crabgrass.

Why the lawn is thin.

The soil is packed hard
Feet, mowers and clay pack the soil so roots, water and air cannot get down. Pulling plugs opens it up.
Seed never touched dirt
Seed thrown on top of a lawn lands on thatch and dries out. Seed that drops into an open hole touches soil and grows.
It was seeded in spring
Spring seed comes up right into crabgrass season, and you cannot use the crabgrass blocker on it. Rutgers puts fall first for a reason.

Cut it short

Mowed lower than usual and cleared so seed reaches dirt, not clippings.

Pull the plugs

Two passes in a cross pattern. The plugs stay on the lawn. Do not rake them, they break down in a week or two.

Drop the seed

Blend matched to your lawn. Tall fescue roots deepest and handles August best.

Starter feed and a watering plan

A starter feed goes down with the seed, and we tell you exactly how to water for three weeks.

Quick answers.

How often does a lawn need it?
Once a year in early fall for most lawns here. Heavy clay or a lot of foot traffic can justify twice.
Will it hit my sprinkler heads?
Only if nobody marks them. Flag the heads, valve boxes and pet fence before we come, or tell us where they run.
How much water does new seed need?
Light and often. The top half inch stays damp for about three weeks, usually a short cycle once or twice a day, then back to normal.
Should I rake up the plugs?
No. They break down on their own and put soil back on the surface. Raking them off throws away what you paid for.
