Weed Control.
Stop them before they start.

Crabgrass gets blocked in April before it sprouts. The weeds that come back every year get killed in the fall, when the kill actually holds. Then the lawn gets thick enough that they have nowhere to grow.

Lawn Weed Control

Lawn weed control in Bernardsville and the Somerset Hills

Pulling weeds is a chore. Spraying them in June is a chore that does not work. Weed control that holds is about timing, and there are two dates a year that matter.

Crabgrass is an annual. It dies every winter and comes back from seed every spring, and the seed only germinates once the soil holds about 55 degrees for a few days. Here that is usually mid April. A pre emergent put down before that stops the seed from ever becoming a plant. Put it down after and you are chasing it all summer.

Dandelions, clover, plantain and the rest are perennials. They live through the winter on their roots. Spray them in spring and the top dies while the root shrugs it off. Spray them in fall, when the plant is pulling everything down into the root for winter, and the control goes down with it. That is why the fall visit is the one that actually clears a lawn.

What weed control includes

  • Spring pre emergent for crabgrass, before soil hits 55 degrees
  • Spot treatment of broadleaf weeds through the season
  • Fall broadleaf application, the one that clears dandelions and clover for good
  • Grub prevention available on the same visits
  • Text when the lawn is safe to walk on, usually the same day

Why a thick lawn is the real weed control

Every weed in your lawn is standing in a gap. Fill the gap with grass and there is no room for the next one. That is why weed control on its own only ever gets you halfway, and why it runs alongside fertilization and fall aeration and seeding in every one of our programs. The first year you see fewer weeds. The second year you mostly stop thinking about them.

Licensed, because the state requires it

Applying weed control to a lawn for hire is licensed work in New Jersey, and the products a licensed applicator can use are not the ones on the shelf at the hardware store. Botti Home Services carries the state pesticide applicator license and the insurance behind it. Every application is logged, and you get a text when the lawn is dry and safe to walk on, usually later the same day.

Grubs, while we are on the subject

A lawn that lifts up like a carpet in August is not a weed problem, it is grubs eating the roots. Grub prevention goes down in early summer and is on the quote form with everything else. If you are seeing dead patches that pull up easily, mention it and we will look at it on the same visit.

Quick answers.

When should weed control start?

The crabgrass pre emergent has to be down before mid April. If you are reading this in May, the fall visit is the next one that matters, and it is the more important one anyway.

Will it kill my grass?

No. Selective products kill broadleaf weeds and leave turf grass alone. The lawn is not sprayed with a general weed killer.

Why do the weeds come back every summer?

Because they were sprayed in spring, when the root survives. Fall control reaches the root. And because the lawn has gaps, which seeding fixes.

Is it safe for pets?

Once the application is dry, yes. You get a text the same day telling you when.
