Lawn Care.
Chester, NJ.
Timed for a colder town.

Chester sits higher and colder than the rest of the Somerset Hills, and the lawn calendar runs a week or two behind Bernardsville. Botti Home Services works that into every visit. We look at the lawn and text a number.

Lawn care in Chester

Lawn care in Chester, NJ, from a company down the road

Chester is the highest and coldest town on the route. Spring arrives late, the first frost comes early, and a program copied from a lower town gets the timing wrong at both ends. Crabgrass blocker goes down a little later, fall seeding a little earlier, and the winterizer cannot wait until the last week of November because the ground may already be frozen.

What Chester lawns actually need

Timing. The soil in Chester Borough and Chester Township warms later, so the spring crabgrass blocker goes down when the soil says so, not when the calendar does. Fall seeding wants to be done in the first half of the Rutgers window, August 15 to October 5, because Chester nights get cold fast and new grass needs warm soil to establish. And the winterizer feeding goes down in early to mid November, well before the December 1 legal cutoff, because waiting risks frozen ground.

The soil itself is a mix. The farm side of the township is deeper and better than most of the Somerset Hills. The wooded side is as rocky and acidic as anywhere. We test before we feed, every time.

  • Fertilization, five feedings timed to Chester soil temperatures
  • Weed control, crabgrass blocked in spring, perennials killed in fall
  • Core aeration and overseeding, August 15 to October 5
  • Tick and mosquito barrier, April through October
  • Winterizer before the December 1 licensed cutoff
  • Mowing, mulch, cleanups, hedges on the same schedule

Deer, ticks and the farm edge

Chester properties border farms, woods and the Black River, and all three bring deer. The tick and mosquito program runs April through October on the perimeter, the walls and the shade. On a property next to open fields it also means keeping the edge cut, which is on the landscaping list.

One company for the whole property

Because Chester is at the far end of the route, it makes sense to do everything in one visit. The lawn, the hedges, the beds, the driveway wash and the deck all go on one quote and one schedule. Botti Home Services is a licensed applicator and insured in New Jersey. The December 1 feeding is on the lawn services list.

Quick answers.

Do you cover Chester Township as well as the Borough?

Yes. Both, plus the roads out toward Long Valley and Hacklebarney.

Why does my Chester lawn green up later than my friend in Basking Ridge?

Elevation. Chester soil warms one to two weeks later. The program is timed for that, which is why we do not use a fixed calendar.

When should I seed in Chester?

Late August into mid September, the early half of the Rutgers window, so the grass has roots before the first hard frost.

Is Chester too far for you?

No. It is on the route and worth the drive for a property that wants the whole yard handled in one visit.
